Retail cannabis will soon be ramping up in West Hollywood, California as the city has approved forty new marijuana business licenses, sixteen of which are for establishments with onsite consumption.

A number of medicinal cannabis dispensaries were given temporary use permits on January 2, 2018, making the West Hollywood one of the first cities in California to permit retail marijuana sales after legalization had gone into full effect the previous day.

Licensed cannabis business types in the city will include retail marijuana outlets, restaurants and cafes, medicinal dispensaries, delivery services, and lounges which will allow smoking and vaping.

“The City was very impressed by the quality and caliber of the applications we received, many of the businesses are unique, innovative, and world class.” wrote the City of West Hollywood in a public statement. “The range of visions among the approved applicants reflect an entirely new era of integrated marketplaces, consumption lounges and cafes, cannabis restaurants, and immersive experiences; all of which go far beyond models currently seen in the State, or even the world.”

Most of the newly-licensed cannabis businesses have plans to open at locations on Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard.

“We’ll see it all integrate together,” West Hollywood Community Affair Manager John Leonard told KABC. “You’ll have a cannabis lounge next to a bar, next to a hotel, next to a high-class restaurant so you can be between all of them and enjoy your time in West Hollywood.”

The first of the newly-licensed businesses are expected to open their doors sometime within the next six months.
