Unlicensed Security Companies And Guards Can Send Marijuana Profits Up In Smoke

The Keys to securing profits, products and people.

In the past few weeks, I have had more than a dozen phone calls from established marijuana businesses and future cannapreneurs inquiring about the permitting process for security companies and security guards in the State of California.  On more than one occasion, I have been informed that some business owners believe that these security services have engaged in trading inside information to criminal elements, who have in turned conducted takedown robberies inside their locations, or that these security personnel have even conducted rip-off’s themselves due to their insider knowledge of business operations.

Now, while no business can protect themselves 100% from theft, robbery, or burglary, business owners can manage their losses by performing due diligence of the highest order especially when it comes to selecting, screening, and hiring personnel to work in a highly confidential environment such as marijuana sales and operations. Below are a few areas that cannapreneurs should inquire about when selecting any company to handle its sensitive security operations.

Of Security Companies you should:

  1. Ensure the company’s PPO License is current and on file with the State of California DCA / BSIS.
  2. Ask for proof of the company’s commercial general liability insurance policy of one million dollars.

Of the Guard Force you should:

  1. Ensure the guard has attended “The Power to Arrest Training” (BPC Sections 7583.6 and 7583.8.)
  2. Have the security company attest to the guards “(32) hours of security officer training.”

If you as a business owner take an active approach in securing your facility, then you should be able to weed out the fly-by-night security operations that may be less than reputable.
