A grandfather wanting to express his appreciation to the staff who had cared for him during a recent stay at a hospital in Warrington, England was unaware that cannabis had been added to the thank-you dessert that he was dropping off.
On May 27, the man brought some cake from his grandson’s 18th birthday party to Warrington Hospital and offered it to staff as a token of his appreciation for their excellent care.
According to a post made on the Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Facebook page, only one staff member ate a small piece of the cake, did not experience any psychoactive effects, and did not care for any patients during the remainder of their shift.
When a senior staff member noticed a strange odor coming from the cake, they contacted Cheshire Police who came and removed it.
“Officers received a report on Monday 27 May that a cake which was suspected to contain drugs had been brought into Warrington Hospital by a member of the public and given to staff,” said Cheshire Police in a statement. “Following an investigation officers determined that the member of the public who had brought in the cake was unaware of the content of the cake as it had been left over from their grandson’s birthday party.”
The Trust investigated the incident and, after interviewing all staff concerned, confirmed that only one staff member had eaten some of the cake and that there were no issues related to the cake that compromised patient care during the shift.
Cheshire Police say that the cake has been destroyed and the case is now closed.
