American business magnate and Tesla CEO Elon Musk appeared on episode #1169 of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast Thursday, September 6 to discuss a variety of topics such as evolving technology, artificial intelligence, fossil fuels, and expensive watches.
At one point, while Rogan is relating a story about Neil DeGrasse Tyson and his cell phone, he notices that Musk is handling a decorative container on the console. Rogan mentions that he got the item in Mexico and that one can fit a joint into it, handing a blunt to Musk who proceeds to place it inside the container.
Rogan retrieves the blunt from the container and, at the 2:10 mark in the video, proceeds to light it. Musk asks if it is a joint or a cigar and Rogan explains that it’s marijuana inside of tobacco.
When asked if he’s ever had it before, Musk explains that he thinks that he has tried it in the past. Rogan then suggested that he might not be able to partake at the moment because of stockholders, to which Musk replied, βI mean it’s legal, right?β
βIt’s totally legal,β says Joe Rogan, passing the blunt to Elon Musk who proceeds to sniff it before taking a puff.
Musk does not appear to actually inhale the smoke before blowing it out, smiling, and handing the blunt back.
But the on-air incident didn’t go over well with everyone who found out about it. Tesla shares fell more than 6% by early Friday, and the company’s accounting chief resigned after having been with the company for only one month.
Additionally, because Musk holds multiple government contracts as CEO of Space X, the United States Air Force is also investigating the incident. Since cannabis is still a federally-banned substance, government workers and contractors are subject to the Drug-Free Workplace Act which mandates that companies with contracts of $100,000 or more adopt a drug-free policy.
