While cannabis use is legal for the vast majority of Canadian adults, certain citizens may be restricted from using it depending on their occupation.
The Canadian military allows its members to use cannabis as long as it is not within eight hours of reporting for duty or during the workday.
The rules for cops regarding marijuana use vary depending on where an officer happens to serve. Officers in Vancouver and Ottawa are allowed to consume as long as it doesn’t affect their job performance, and Toronto police can’t consume cannabis within 28 days of serving.
In Calgary, officers are restricted from using recreational marijuana entirely.
“[Officers] who are qualified to use firearms and are able to be operationally deployed, as well as sworn police recruits, are prohibited from using recreational cannabis on or off duty,” states an internal Calgary Police memo sent by the police chief.
But the Calgary Police Association (CPA), which represents Calgary officers, has filed a grievance over the ban, saying that the rules go too far by not allowing police to use cannabis legally off duty.
According to CPA President Les Kaminski, the Calgary Police Service has reached out to the union in the interest of opening a dialogue on the matter. A meeting between the two is expected soon, possibly sometime next week.
