Canada’s legalization date is less than two weeks away, and when it arrives, cannabis consumers will be able to bring their marijuana with them when they fly around the country.
On October 17, passengers on domestic Canadian flights will be allowed to pack thirty grams in their luggage, the maximum amount allowed for personal possession under Bill C-45.
But Transport Minister, Marc Garneau says that travelers should leave their cannabis at home if they are flying in or out of the country, regardless of legal status.
People flying into Canada with cannabis products are advised to declare them to the Canada Border Services Agency when they arrive, or they may be facing penalties including arrest and prosecution.
The Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority (CATSA) said this past week that it was still in the process of ensuring that the new policies align with the law.
“We have been working with Transport Canada since the government passed the cannabis legislation to ensure our protocols are consistent with government policy,” said CATSA spokeswoman Christine Langlois. “We expect to finalize our procedures in the coming days.”
Smoking cannabis aboard any flight, domestic or not, remains illegal.
