Southern University has become the first historically black university to launch a hemp-derived CBD product line.
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and their partner Ilera Holistic Healthcare (Ilera) today unveiled their new hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) product line, which will be available for purchase at Louisiana dispensaries and other retail outlets.
The new line, ALAFIA, which means inner peace in the Yoruba language, was officially launched at a press conference and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the H&W Drug Store Dispensary in New Orleans, where the first purchase from the product line was made.
“This is an exciting time for healthcare and business here in the state of Louisiana, and Southern University is honored to be a part of it all,” said Southern University System President Ray L. Belton. “Southern has been a leader in agriculture and the sciences for 140 years while staying true to its mission of access. This CBD venture with Ilera encompasses all of that. We look forward to advancing this vision and serving as a model for other universities.”
Ilera CEO Chanda Macias says that their vision has always focused on affordability and patient access.
Macias says it was imperative that they make high-quality products that support health and wellness available to patients over the counter without a prescription.
Current ALAFIA Pure CBD tinctures include Isolate CBD and Full Spectrum CBD and come in 500mg ($40) and 1000mg ($80) strengths.
ALAFIA tinctures, which are legal for sale in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill, are laboratory tested and pesticide-free.
Additional CBD products are expected to be announced soon.
