Nineteen-year-old Marshala Perkins from Dallas, Texas was feeling bored on the evening of February 6 and decided to go out with her friends for a change of pace. She was sitting in her car waiting for them to show up when an unexpected visitor drove up to where she was parked.
“I sat in my car for like, two minutes waiting on my friends,” Perkins told the Star-Telegram. “And while I was waiting, a police car pulled up right behind me.”
After running Perkins’ license and registration, the officer smelled marijuana and asked her to step out of the vehicle. During a search of the car, the cop discovered two grams of cannabis.
Perkins was arrested and booked into the Hunt County Jail and released the following morning at ten.
While in police custody, her mugshot was taken and later posted to the Greenville Police Facebook page. Embarrassed by the posting, she initially denied that it was her to those who asked.
In the mugshot photo, Perkins is wearing a contoured look with pink eyeshadow, false lashes, and subtle gold highlights.
But after her photo popped up on the Mugshot Baes Twitter account where pictures of attractive inmates are tweeted, and a retweet that garnered 280,000 likes, Perkins’ YouTube and other social media accounts began to grow in the months since the arrest.
“My phone started going crazy,” said Perkins. “I was still kind of embarrassed about it because it was something I didn’t want people to know. But then when I started reading the comments, I was like, besides me being in jail, people are really noticing my talent and what I can do.”
In response to the growing number of requests for advice, the aspiring makeup artist has started an Instagram account for makeup tutorials and appointments. According to Perkins, a company has also approached her about starting her own makeup line.
